LeskovcB - that what you've said about polish is a bullshit. In Poland, from where I am, "nie" means "no" and "tak" means "yes". However, we use "no", pronunced like it's written(not :noł:), as informal and depending on accent smoetimes impolite word for "yes".

i think it came from another place...
sometimes people associate those with mental problems with making sounds that are kind of like "duhhhhh..." so maybe when you say DUH to someone you're implying they're mentally ill because they've said something so obvious...
it's not a very nice implication but it makes sense
