"...but we're debating a creationist on YouTube."
Ah yes, internet debate, special olympics... even if you win, you're still retarded. Too true.

Yeah. My one-sentence definition of cryogenics (or cryonics) is pretty much as thorough as my knowledge of it is, aside from the Walt Disney story. I swear, when I was three at Disney World, I fucking fell into a hole and wandered for an hour and SAW that bastard in a tube!! I'm pretty sure that part wasn't a dream, but the giant ant might have been.

'Conceding it without caveat can leave problems later on.'
In a REAL debate, yes, definitely, but we're debating a creationist on YouTube.

"When I say 'leave it to the cryogenicists,' I mean that I have about as much knowledge of cryogenics as a high-school students who's only read the chapter-introduction does about osmosis."
That may be so, though I doubt that any of us in this debate are trained theologians or cosmologists etc. And even though I'm taking basic neuroscience courses, I'm certainly not an evolutionary biologist. If you don't want to get into it, that's fine. But expertise doesn't seem to be a prerequisite here.

"Well, you know what I mean. I breathe and eat, but I don't see a God, you know."
Yes, but whether or not there is such a thing as absolutes is a major issue. Conceding it without caveat can leave problems later on.

"Leave the future of cryogenics up to the cryogenicists."
Indeed... though I would like to think there is a good chance they'll iron out most of the wrinkles in the next 30 years. Of course, it's moot point if I'm wrong about Ray Kurzweil's predicted timetable being a bit too ambitious.

"I can accept the first two absolute truths, since I know from experience that those are true..."
While they are certainly true at present, I simply don't buy the idea that those are absolutes that will never change. There is also the problem that calling these absolute requires a large number of things to be predefined in a particular way, which leads to other philosophical problems.

A brilliant man who beat his children with the handle of a pick axe, who celebrates AIDS and dead soldiers, who broke a girl's heart to the point she turned away from the church and killed herself. Also, again, Hitler had faith in Christ and apparently that's all you need to get into Heaven. |
