Actually, he was influenced by Cat Stevens (and Leonard Cohen, Taj Mahal, David Lindley), all of whom used to visit his grandparents music store, The Folk Music Center and Museum, in Claremont, CA. He 'broke out' when Taj Mahal took him on the road at 20...
