Author Christopher Hitchens debates the Reverend Al Sharpton on the question of whether morality can exist in the absence of God. ----- A Debate: God Is Not Great with Al Sharpton and Christopher Hitchens. Taking on possibly the greatest issue of our time - the malignant force of religion in the world - Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion through a close and learned reading of the major religious texts, citing numerous historical instances in which sexual repression and outrageous acts of violence have been committed in the name of God. He argues for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix. -- NYPL Christopher Hitchens is an author, journalist and literary critic. Now living in Washington, D.C., he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Nation and Slate; additionally, he is an occasional contributor to many other publications. Al Sharpton Jr. is a Pentecostal minister, a political activist, civil rights activist and film actor. In recent years, Sharpton has also become a perennial candidate in his quest for the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States. Author of "Go and Tell Pharaoh: The Autobiography of the Reverend Al Sharpton."

Quite laughable that a hack like Sharpton is even allowed to be onstage with a true intellectual like Hitchens.......kinda like letting a retard debate a Ph.D.

Hitchens can't be touched

That's an assumption that the natives of Australia have never heard of or read the Bible. Many ministries from all over the world have always gone out into the deepest most remote part of the world to tell about Jesus.

Right, Jesus died for the whole world, whoever believes will be saved. God doesn't want one soul perish but all to repent. This is true. A "good person" is not indeed good. Nobody has never told a lie, or manipulated, been selfish, self promoted etc. Nobody is perfect, and they may be better than the majority, but this is arguing over degrees of morality. God is perfect and treats sin the same with the same punishment. Only through trusting and faith in Jesus can you be reconciled with God.

timcp1 - According to Christians a serial murderer who has destroyed the lives of many people, not just of his victims but also their families, can be 'saved' if he 'turns to Jesus' after his murderous spree. But an atheist who is a decent person, spends his life doing good and never harms anyone is considered a hellbound sinner. Honestly, what sort of morality is that?

Let me break this shit down. How about lets say the Aborigines in Australia? They have never heard of or read the bible and I doubt they're running around killing each other and raping everyone. In fact, I'm willing to bet they live much more "moral" lives than 99.9% of religious people

Sharpton is a clown.

I would have to look at the crime rate data source to see exactly. One reason I can give you, is that many people believe they can do anything they want and just ask Jesus to forgive them. This specific belief is told to be false in the Bible. It says that we aren't to use Jesus as a shield for committing sin. So Biblical hypocrisy will be held against you.
timcp1 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
People's morals come from themselves that is why they're messed up. They don't follow the morals of Jesus, and many don't believe he is the son of God nor place faith in him to forgive their sins. But if the majority believe that way, without God, that doesn't make them right. It only makes them right because there is more of them. The Bible says you have morals like a Christian because God wrote it in your heart. But many don't give credit to Jesus, they become just unto themselves.

I do not need god to tell me what is good. A good comes from every person himself. After you critically analyse an action you make, from its origin in mind, its purpose and its effect and even then you think the action creates good to yourself and to others than it is a moral action. In god's case you also ask whether an action is in line with what god says, well i don't need god i just ask my directing mind. another one, what was before jesus crist showed up in this world?
