I agree with you, the science of fission and fusion is incredible. If we can find a way to contain plasma, we'll have reactors that can power cities with a couple grams of fuel. But the horror of this much power stems from war. I forget the count, but at the height of the cold war, there was enough nuclear weaponry to destroy the world like 30-40 times over. The army calls such things NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical), I called them the worst things man could have ever created.

It's not horrible...it's gorgeous, and absolutely brilliant. I studied up to some 3rd year Physics classes in Univeristy, and the physics involved here is just absolutely beautiful, and very complicated. Just absolutely brilliant ... brilliant. What IS horrible, very horrible, is what we humans do with it. So much good can come of this science, but of course human nature dictates that we first focus on the bad that can come of it.

Showed this to a group of lively 16 year olds who aren't particulary interested in science or school in general.A colleague suggested this to show them the power of splitting the atom and the consequences it can have. It is the only time they have been totally silent for me. They were stunned and judging from their questions afterwards shocked
