That is bollocks. What really raised the profile of staring in the US was the contest between Spatski and IBM's deep Blue eyes in 89 shortly after Spatski became World champion. The are still conspiracy theories going around even now that deep blue eyes had some human input to stop its lights from blinking. If it wasn't for that infamous match Cott's would still be taking part in winking competitions.

Youre absolutely right. I saw those pictures of Jeff in "the dentists chair," pissed in a nightclub with Derek Griffiths, Chris Evans, Kevin the Gerbil, Mr T , Carol Vorderman and Norm from Cheers. They don't care about the grass roots staring fan.

I think we have to ask ourselves a searching question here. Would the UK Stareathon Authority ever be prepared to demand that the Government clear the atmospheric pollution for Stareathon Finals, like the Chinese did this year? In starathon, PM10 (particles of less than ten microns diameter) are a major problem as an eye irritant. What that means in practical terms is that serious contenders have to work in kipper-works in preparation, to get their PM10 tollerances to a reasonable level.

Agree. Yi Po was good but to describe him has a different league relegates that real genius of the gods of the sport such as Spatsky and Giggles Clifton. The judges were dodgy. Jeff Phillips was out of shape for the Olympics. There was a picture of him in The Mirror just before he flew out there and he clearly was on drunken night out with Darren Day and Derrick Griffiths (from Playaway). He should leave the 'celebrity friends' bit alone until he makes his mark. Those two will do him no good.
