The most important thing in security is that there is no such thing as being totally secure (unless of course your computer is not connected to the outside world at all). All these security measures are what we call Defense in Depth. They allow different layers of security to make it difficult (but not impossible) to break into. So any security measure is better than nothing, even WEP because chances are most people won't know how to break it, unless they're into security and such.

No. MAC isn't an IP. A MAC address is a unique number that is used for wireless cards. A MAC address never changes, unless you "spoof" it. Spoofing a MAC address is not hard at all. (Even my WRT54GL router can do it... with the default firmware)

uMM some one connecting to your network when its broadcasted freely is not hacking. MAC address filtering can be broken in a few minutes it is not hard to do. I would suggest turning on WPA or WPA 2 ontop of it.
