With the first reason, tell me about it. Case in point: Scott Joplin. His rag pieces were meant to be played at a respectable pace to emphasize the melody. However many Jazz and Classical artists often speed them up just to showcase their talent. This even happened in Joplin's lifetime, and he often expressed his hatred for it.
It's mature performers that seek to interpret what the piece is trying to convey, instead of mining it for opportunities to show off their technique. |
