This is one incredible stunt to raise awareness for Music Ed! Everybody who's performed in a (semi-)professional symphony orchestra knows that orchestras can play this kind of stuff without a conductor. The conductor is mostly there for musical ideas in the rehearsal stages more so than waving hands at the concerts. It's often the case that the orchestra even ignores the conductor if he/she is bad (i.e. has no ideas or inspiration to offer). Detroit must have sold a lot of tickets for this hoax.
