Who is Shane? Where did he come from? What is in his past that we never get to know? One hint is in this final scene. When he tells Wilson that "you're a lowdown Yankee liar", it suggests that he is a disenfranchised Southerner, a cast off from the Civil War. He avenges the murder of Torey, who was a confirmed "Johnny Reb" in the story (Elijah Cook). Shane is an ex-Confederate. That's my guess.

Without doubt the best western scene ever filmed.

I've watched this shootout probably 20 or 30 times. It is one of the best, most intense scenes I've ever seen in a Western or any movie for that matter. Note that when Joey shouts, "Shane, look out!", Shane whirls around and his gun goes off too soon, and so he actually shoots at the floor. But, the bad guy falls from the second floor in spite of this. Still, an awesome scene that I'll never forget.

This movie really got me into Western stuff.

yes, that was good.
This was a follow up to where the bad guy gun slinger taunted a regular ex Confederate solider to engage in a duel by insulting all Confederates saying Stonewall Jackson and Robert E Lee were low down.....
