How about vaudeville theater, cabaret and music hall? It is (improvised) music theater, acting, humor, good lyrics etc.. I bet it is more difficult to put up a good show then to play difficult jazz music because you have to coordinate people and ideas and jazz is not people and ideas, just music. Perhaps music theater is very close to swing, jazz and American folk but if you are only interested in jazz music it is still a relevant point.

Take folk music. It usually isn't just folk music but folkloric music, meaning that it is music, stories, legends, art, costums, customs and religiousness. So everything that is folkloric gets a whole other meaning then you would get with jazz music.

Compare the emotions you feel when listening to classical music, and jazz. Classical music can easily express humorous, melancholic, dramatic, heroic, erotic or nostalgic feelings. Jazz is an empty pan horse. Classical music can be visual and it draws heavily from theater, poetry, religion and dance, and jazz never reaches any hight in those area's. Tap dance is not ballet and folk dance, musicals draw from old theater and opera, jazz inspired poetry is a joke. Rich music isn't just about music.

Go for it.. but for leaning to play this one I would study by ear.. that expression can only come from listening

Do your homework. Clapton said several times in different interviews that Django is the reference in guitarmusic (not only guitar playing).
Clapton and many other guitar hero's from Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page to Steve Vai in rock music; Segovia and Beam in classical music... , Ry Cooder, Carlos Santana, BB King and many others... they all kneel down devotedly when they hear Django.
